Chapter 21

A Successful Mission

New Hope Town

Avoiding the coast and any possible patrolling alien ships with their energy cannons Peter Johansson had flown London west across the Gulf of Libertad 200 miles south of the coast road that led to Southport then swung wide to the south avoiding the Norwegian Peninsula. Within range of Barcelona at its station at the peninsula’s southeastern tip London sent them the first report of the mission’s success. The Barcelona was too far to the east for direct communications with the oceanographic research station at Monterey so Johansson kept within a hundred miles of the coast to stay within range of the station to transmit his report. London was 250 miles to the southeast when communications was established with the station at Monterey.

The research station immediately relayed London’s position and report of success to the settlement at Rocky Point 200 miles to the west. Within minutes a shuttle launched towards Novo Napoli which was too far away to make direct communications but the shuttle would be able to make contact with their comm center in about an hour. Once communications were established with the Novo Napoli comm center the shuttle relayed the brief initial mission report from London which then sent it on to Ranger headquarters in New Hope Town via a set of communication relays that had been emplaced along the 900 miles between the two settlements over the preceding weeks. The report was received in New Hope Town just after 0330 local time with their estimated time of arrival given as shortly after dawn.

As soon as the New Hope Town Main Terminal’s comm center received the message from Novo Napoli the duty communications officer Lieutenant Parvati Mehta called the senior comm officer Lieutenant Colonel Stafford. Stafford would in turn inform General Jamison and Colonel Gupta. Mehta also called Colonel Martinez, the Air Ops officer who had asked to be informed as soon as anything came in regarding the London. The young comm officer from India then had one other call to make. She punched in the code for Major MacCaffrey at the residence.

Naomi MacCaffrey’s comm beeped on the nightstand next to her and she slowly opened her eyes in the dark and reached for it. Without sitting up she answered sleepily, “Major MacCaffrey here.”

“Major, this is Parvati over at the comm center. We just got word from Novo Napoli that London is inbound. They’ll be here in a couple of hours.”

Naomi sat up and told the lights to come on, “Lights on low!” In the dim light she glanced over at Major Lucia Abrazzi who was now looking at her through one half-open eye in curiosity. Abrazzi had moved up from an air mattress on the floor in the recreation room to the king-sized bed in Cassidy’s master bedroom while Zoey Bryant was away on the mission. “What do you know, Parv?” she asked.

Mehta replied, “Not much yet but they said it was a big success. They had a few casualties but I don’t have a list yet.
